Eric Wang is a grade 12 full time student at Glenforst High School. He is quite extraordinary and is the winner of the ‘Icy Seaton Youth Volunteer Achievement Award’. Mayor Bonnie Crombie presented Eric with the award at the Volunteer Appreciation event held by Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre (DBNC) on September 25th this year. The award recognizes young people ages 15-20 for their community service within a 12-month period. Eric is just one of the many success stories of the agency’s Newcomer Youth Community Engagement (NYCE) program.
The NYCE Lounge offers youth an opportunity to hone their skills by offering them a platform to organize their own workshops. Every Wednesday, Eric runs his own computer coding workshops for youth. “I want to assist my fellow students and peers to improve their grades in school and thus help the community,” he says.
NYCE encourages youth to volunteer and Eric began in 2015 as a peer/student tutor. He underlines, “Volunteering at the NYCE lounge helped me to become a better communicator and develop life skills such as cooking and public speaking.” He advises his peers, “Keep yourself open minded because there is always something new to learn.”
